Frequently asked questions

Does Malmoi need an internet connection?

No. The whole dictionary — 30,031 words, their meanings, examples and conjugations — is stored on your device. Search, browse and scan all work in aeroplane mode.

How do I search if I cannot type Hangul?

Type the romanization (saranghada) or the English meaning (to love). The search field accepts all three and works out which you meant.

What does the Scan tab do?

Photograph Korean text — a sign, a menu, a page — and every word becomes tappable, showing its dictionary form and meaning. Text photographed without spaces is split into words automatically.

A word I looked up is missing or wrong. What now?

Shake the device to open a report, or email the address above with the word. The dictionary is rebuilt regularly and corrections go into the next update.

Where does the dictionary content come from?

Wiktionary via kaikki.org, used under CC BY-SA, with word frequency from the OpenSubtitles corpus. The full list is on the About tab inside the app.
